Cats in the Basement

By Kashmir

Summary: The story of how I got hooked, recently published at Etcetera's World of Cats.

I have never seen Cats. I will admit that right now. I would love to see it, but I haven't yet. And yet, I find that it wasn't the Cats's Eyes logo that attracted me, or the hype, or the broken records... It was the fact the basement was lonely.

Yes. The basement was very quiet, and I'm a rather timid kid, ten or not ten at the time. At my old house, when I was scared by the silence, I would turn on the TV, but since there was no longer a TV in the basement to provide some noise, I turned to the cassette player. Now, what to listen to? Ten was too old for Sesame St. tapes (this took place in B.T.M.E.: Before Tickle-Me-Elmo). Lullabys were not appropriate. Hmmm, this looks interesting. Cats. I like Cats. I have two, and they're really sweet. Of course, all the say is 'meow', but hey, it'll fill the silence.

So I stuck the tape in and waited for a boisterous round of meowing. Instead, I jumped a mile high at the sound of, 'Macavity!' (I still haven't figured out why I put side 4 in before side 3, and for a long time I thought 'Skimbleshanks' was the last song...) Well, I waited out the scary music, and the first song began.

I like 'Macavity'. I really did. I had no idea what the heck it signified, but I liked it just the same. Now, when 'Mr. Mistoffelees' came on... Oh man, I loved that one! I wish Timothy Scott was still alive. Anyway, I ended up playing the entire tape, and then playing it every time the basement got lonely.

Now, two years later, I saw an advertisement for Cats on PBS. Well, curiosity killed the cat - I mean, dog. I mean - well anyway, I wanted to watch it. Just out of curiosity. I wanted to put meaning into the songs I had only heard and not understood. I even bought a blank tape so that I could go to bed without a (major) fight.

The first time I saw Cats I liked it. It was cute. I watched it again. I really liked it. I watched it a couple times more, and then it gradually faded away.

And returned full force about a month later.

I tell you, I'm innocent. I was just bored. I turned on Cats and got hooked.

I am now thirteen and officially obssessed. I admit and am proud of it, although my friends a) think it's a bit strange and b) I'm nuts (I think they're nuts). I have my own little fanfic site (http://pastthejelliclemoon.freeservers.com for those curious) and devote my time to writing my own fics. But hey, the insane are happy (especially when JB's on the screen!).

Among the Jellicles eternally known as,

Kashmir

I knew that!
